The largest and structurally the most complex vitamin, vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin that is involved in the metabolic activities in every cell of the human body. There are four near-structural forms in which this vitamin exists. Vitamin B12’s role in the production of red blood cells, nerve tissue health and brain function is of crucial nature. This vitamin is known by the name of Cobalamin as well.

Vitamin B12 vs Cyanocobalamin

There are two common sources of vitamin B12 from which it is derived. These are Cyanocobalamin and Methylcobalamin. There is a lot of structural similarity between these two, both contain a cobalt ion surrounded by a corrin ring. However, the difference between these two molecules lies in the conjugated molecule. As you can guess from the name, it is methyl group in the case of Methylcobalamin while a cyanide molecule is attached to the cobalt ion in the case of Cyanocobalamin. It is worth mentioning here that Cyanocobalamin is a synthetic form of vitamin B12 while Methylcobalamin is a naturally existing form of vitamin B12.
